-
- THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO TAMMY FAYE is a two hour, two act
musical that traces the life of the most successful female
televangelist in U.S. History, Tammy Faye Bakker (now Messner),
from her born-again moment at the age of 10 to her battle today
against cancer. In between is a life filled with "moments:" a life
of huge successes and terrible failures. The show includes a
headline-grabbing sex scandal and the fall of the PTL kingdom,
which she and then-husband, Jim Bakker, created out of nothing.
Throughout the show, she finds redemption as an evangelist
Christian minister who preaches nonjudgmental gospel and tries to
get the church to stop throwing the first stone. Today, Messner
reaches out to all Christians, but particularly gay men, and she
has thereby become a gay icon. The musical is about heart and
resilience and also contains tons of comedic moments with a
stirring, eclectic pop score and a fantasy-inspired book.
-
- In 2005, acclaimed playwright Lanford Wilson predicted for the
show: "It'll go over like Oreo's!" So far, so true! The musical
was previously produced in Houston as a reading at the University
of St. Thomas and recently at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival at
the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati. For more information on the
show, please visit: http://www.fdovalina.com and
